How to help the Bahamas after Dorian

After Hurricane Dorian reached 200-mile-per-hour winds, it basically stopped on top of two islands in the Bahamas and pounded them for 24 hours. Five people are dead, and they’re going to find more. Here’s how it looks.

Grand Bahama Island, one of the two devastated islands, is 55 miles from the coast of Florida. The only reason this happened there and not in Florida or Puerto Rico is the random movement of tropical winds.

Where to contribute

Beware of scammers using this tragedy to steal your money. Here are legitimate places to contribute to help the Bahamian people recover:

United Way (pledges 100% of all donations directly to recovery efforts).

Cruise lines come through for disaster recovery

Cruise lines frequently visit the Bahamas. You would think they’d feel an obligation to help. In fact, they did.

• The Walt Disney Company will donate $1 million to Bahamas relief and recovery efforts.
• Carnival Cruises has pledged support, amount to be determined.
• Royal Caribbean posted this heartfelt note along with a pledge of $1 million.
