Cheap dreams and domain names

If you have an idea, you can spend hours trying to find the right name for it.

GoDaddy and NameCheap have efficient tools for searching domains.

And Trademarkia will tell you who’s attempted to trademark the name, and for which services.

That’s a lot easier than the real work of figuring out who would pay for what you’re imagining, how you will build it, or whether it’s just an idle idea or something you actually want to spend time on.

And a funny thing happens. When you really work on things, you learn more about them. Their meaning shifts. And the name you imagined doesn’t really fit your expanded vision of the idea.

Do names matter?

Sure they do. A clever name is memorable. So is a clever book title.

But often what we think is a great name is just a familiar name for a great idea.

Walmart, Uber, and ChatGPT aren’t great names. They’re just names for things that people built that solved customer problems.

We remember the names because the products were well constructed and marketed.

Spend more time building than naming. You won’t regret it.

What does this have to do with your post’s topic? Nothing, but I just felt compelled to write it. My apologies if it offended anyone.
