The ideal “retirement”
This is the first Independence Day of what is supposed to be my old age (65).
But . . .
After decades of working, my network is huge.
My reputation is strong.
My health insurance is almost free (thanks, Medicare).
My body is fine.
My mind is active.
My work is rewarding.
My kids are pretty close to independent.
I can take time off when I want and still get everything done on time.
And I can talk to all of you ever day.
Why would I change anything?
Some people would say “This beats working.”
I’d say it beats not working, too.
Enjoy your Independence Day. I am.
Medicare is terrific and is the one good thing that comes with turning 65 beyond just being alive. But it isn’t free, even if it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than health insurance and health care costs pre-age 65.
My brother (64 this month) works in health care in a supporting role and plans to work as long as he’s happy doing it. I was a teacher, and I bailed as soon as I could (56) because teaching is a young person’s game and conditions were getting ridiculous. Whatever works for you its the right choice.
Josh, I’m pleased to have had a front-row seat to your evolution as a professional and human being. You’ve navigated your re-wirement with courage, patience, and wisdom. May the 4th be with you.
